With the price of polypropylene (PP) raw material continuing to climb and hitting new highs, the plastics industry faces immense cost pressure—how can it break through and survive? Meanwhile, the price of PP strapping continues to rise.

Recently, spot prices for polypropylene (PP) raw materials have continued to climb, hitting new highs for the current period. With prices changing daily, downstream plastic processing enterprises—spanning sectors such as packaging, injection molding, strapping, non-woven fabrics, home appliances, and automotive components—are facing immense operational pressure. The entire industrial chain is confronting a severe new challenge, with the PP strapping manufacturing sector, in particular, struggling to survive.

This surge in PP prices is driven by a confluence of factors. International crude oil prices have remained high, bolstered by geopolitical tensions, shipping risks, and production cuts by OPEC+, which has directly driven up the cost of propylene monomer. Compounding this, the concentrated maintenance of several petrochemical plants, tight market supply, and low inventory levels have created a "floor" for costs while simultaneously constricting supply—a combination that has pushed both PP futures and spot prices steadily upward. For downstream plastic processors, for whom polypropylene often accounts for over 70% of raw material costs, even minor price fluctuations can instantly erode profit margins. Many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) now face a painful dilemma: accepting orders leads to losses, while refusing orders forces a halt to production—or, in some cases, they may have orders but be unable to source the necessary raw materials.

"Raw material costs are rising rapidly, yet downstream customers show limited willingness to accept price adjustments, making it difficult to fully pass on these costs. In the market for general-purpose PP strapping, competition is fierce and products are highly commoditized; manufacturers that have long relied on a 'low margins, high volume' strategy are now under immense strain."

In the industry, the raw material polypropylene (PP) is jokingly referred to as "golden PP."
